Full Pre-Departure Checklist

Mandatory To-Dos Over the Course of the Semester

This page is meant to give a general sense of everything that needs to be completed during the pre-departure process.  Please check the monthly headers for exact due-dates.  The monthly headers also have items we recommend to do, but that are not required.

  • Confirm your place in the program by submitting $500 reservation fee.
  • NYU students, RSVP to a pre-departure orientation.
  • Review introductory email from the Office of Global Services (OGS) and then:
    • Review, Renew or Apply for your passport – Must be valid until at least 3 months after the program ends
    • Run GlobalChek Plus for visa/immigration advice
    • Submit a color scan of your passport biographical information page
    • Complete the OGS Visa Inquiry Form
    • Begin gathering the necessary visa documents to be in line with all deadlines
    • International Students: Meet with an International Student Advisor at OGS
  • Visiting Students: Set up NYU Email.
  • Attend a Pre-departure Orientation (only one session attendance required).
  • Register for Courses after meeting with your Academic Advisor
  • Submit Health Forms to NYU Student Health Center.
  • Submit Your Flight Details into NYU Traveler & the Study Away Confirmation Portal
  • Complete all aspects of the Study Away Confirmation Portal (this includes the housing application and required forms).
  • Submit Housing Reservation Payment.
  • Pay your NYU e-bill.
  • Submit approved photo to receive NYU ID Card (first time cardholders ONLY). Current and returning students: you need to bring your NYU ID with you!
  • Register with HTH to print your health insurance ID card.
  • Notify your bank and credit cards that you will be abroad.
  • Check the luggage restrictions for your airline before you pack.
  • Have all medications you may need for the full term & bring a copy of prescriptions.
  • Pack a carry on with all important paperwork, phone numbers, medications, and a change of clothes in case your luggage arrives late.
  • Review final Pre-Departure Checklist post in January to make sure all loose ends are tied up.
  • Review Travel and Arrival Cheat Sheet (print two copies – one for you and one for your parents).
